Commando Raid Commemorating the 145th anniversary of the capture of the USS Reliance & USS Satellite Reported by R. Campbell

On the 2nd and 3th of August 2008 the
National Civil War Naval Museum put on
the last of its summer Cool History
Programs. The theme was Boarding
Actions. Two shows were performed each
day.
Items for the programs included:
Cutlass Drill Demonstration. After a
presentation of the different positions for
using the weapons was performed by the
reenactors the audience had a chance to
participate.
Next was a Hands on Boarding
Weapons Show. The audience had the
chance to feel the weapons used during a
boarding action - axes, pikes, cutlasses and
pistols.
During the capture of the Reliance Dr.
Daniel B. Conrad captured a sword he
would later used during the Battle of
Mobile. That and an authentic Single Stick
were shown to the audience.
A Power Point Presentation Show high
lighted the career of Capt John Taylor
Wood. He lead many of the successful
Confederate commando raids including the
capture of the Reliance and Satellite
After a Tour of the Museum’s Time
Line the audience enjoyed watching the
firing of an original 7inch Brooke cannon
recovered from the CSS Jackson.

The Museum has an original.
Jerry Franklin readys a section to
practice pike drills. Roger, Marty, Steve
and John are ready. The full scale partial
model of the USS Hartford is behind.
